Apple Crumble

  • 900g green apples, peeled and sliced about 1⁄4 inch thick
  • 2 tbsps sugar
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1⁄2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 125g butter
  • 125g brown sugar
  • 125g plain flour
  • 80g ground almonds
  • 80g oats
  • 1⁄4 tsp salt
  • 100g slivered almonds


Step 1

Preheat oven to 190°C. Combine the apples, sugar, lemon zest, juice and nutmeg, and toss to blend.

Step 2

Scrape into a 23cm glass pie dish or similar baking dish.

Step 3

Combine the butter, brown sugar, flour, ground almonds, oats and salt in a bowl, and use your fingers or a pastry blender to work into a crumbly mixture.

Step 4

Sprinkle the crumble mixture over apples and bake for 30 minutes. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top and bake for another 10 minutes or until apples are cooked, juices are bubbling and the topping is crisp.

Step 5

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream or custard.
