Chocolate Loaf

Preheat your oven and satisfy your chocolate craving with this delicious cake.


  • 110g butter
  • 300g sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsps vanilla essence
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 70g cocoa powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 160g plain flour
  • 180ml milk
  • For the Chocolate Ganache
  • 190g icing sugar
  • 3 tbsps cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 3-4 tbsps milk
  • 2 tbsps pecans or walnuts, chopped


Step 1

Heat the oven to 180°C. Grease and flour a loaf pan or spray with baking spray.

Step 2

Beat the sugar and butter together until well blended. With the mixer on low speed, add the salt, vanilla essence, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, and cocoa. Mix until blended. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add about one-third of the flour and half of the milk and mix on low speed until blended. Add another one-third of the flour and the remaining milk and mix until well blended. Add the remaining flour and mix until blended. Do not overbeat.

Step 3

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly. Bake for about 60 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Remove to a rack to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and cool completely on a rack.

Step 4

For the chocolate ganache, add all of the ingredients to a large bowl and whisk to combine. Pour the ganache over the cooled cake. Garnish with chopped nuts.
